Skoda Auto received its name upon merging with weapons manufacturer Skoda Works in 1924. The company had previously been producing and repairing bicycles since 1895. Within a few years it had moved on to motorcycles and in 1905 produced its first car.

During both World Wars Skoda was preoccupied with arms production but in 1945 the company was separated from Skoda Works as part of a plan to rejuvenate the Czech economy. Political instability in subsequent years obstructed the company’s development, though it soon established a monopoly in its home market.

Despite producing some popular models during the 1970s and 1980s, with the Estelle and Rapid successful in the RAC rally during this time, Skoda cars were soon viewed by many as outdated. Sales in Western Europe were not as strong as in the East, though a presence was maintained and the brand was respected for its reliability.

In 1987 the arrival of the Favorit saw Skoda begin to compete with other European manufacturers, as its technology advanced and the model was instantly popular. It was designed by renowned Italian company Bertone and together with its successor the Felicia was influential in improving Skoda’s image.

Revolution in 1990 led to the privatisation of Skoda, with the government subsequently deciding foreign help was needed to further advance the company. As a result it came under the control of Volkswagen in 1991 and gained access to the German manufacturer’s engineering and design skills. With the introduction of the Fabia and Octavia the brand has been dramatically revived.
