Although Ferrari is known best for its racing the Italian company also has a history of producing high performance road cars. Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 as a sponsor for amateur racing drivers, Ferrari soon began a partnership with Alfa Romeo but this was ended when Ferrari established its own factories during the 1940s.
The first Ferrari race car was produced in 1940 but it saw little competition due to the Second World War and the bombing of the Ferrari factory in 1944. By 1946 the plant was rebuilt and the company’s first road car – the 125 S – was built the following year.
Ferrari models quickly became popular, though Enzo Ferrari viewed commercial production simply as a means to fund the brand’s racing efforts. The first Ferrari win came in 1949 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the company entered the inaugural Formula One World Championship the following year.
Ferrari is now the only constructor remaining from the beginning of the championship and has become the most successful in its history – winning 14 Constructors’ titles as well as 14 Drivers’ championships.
Commercially available Ferraris are among the most expensive vehicles on the market due to their prestige and high sports performance. Among the many supercars the brand has produced is the Ferrari Enzo, named after the founder who died in 1988.
