Paul Tunnicliffe, managing director of Subaru, said the car offers a combination of features not available in rival models.

"The all-new, fourth-generation Outback raises the bar yet again, in particular thanks to its peerless go-anywhere driveability and its spacious and luxuriously-appointed cabin," he explained.

Other parts under the bonnet include completely reengineered suspension, while inside the car sit gadgets such as Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning and cruise control.

Prices start at £26,295 on the road.

Meanwhile, Subaru also announced recently it was celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Legacy Tourer with a fifth-generation edition of the estate car.

Buyers of the latest addition to the manufacturer’s line up will find it comes with four-channel anti-lock brakes, featuring brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.

Driver and passenger front airbags, along with side and curtain airbags, also come as standard.

In addition, the clutch and brake pedals are designed to snap off under extreme pressure so that a motorist’s lower limbs are protected.

Meanwhile, external features put in place to minimise risk to pedestrians include collapsible windscreen wipers, a gently curved bonnet and a more rounded bumper.

The model is available in trim levels RC and RX.

Prices for the first start at £20,000, while the second costs from £22,225.
