The MG supermini, the real version of which will be called the MG3, was developed by the MG Global Design team, headed up by Brit Anthony Williams-Kenny, who is the company’s design director, based in Birmingham.

Aimed at attracting the broadest audience possible, the four-metre long vehicle is a statement of intent from MG, which sees the car as a preview of its overall design direction.

With a chic interior consisting of clean, simple lines and boasting dashes of colour, the MG3 will also feature enhanced connectivity through Bluetooth and is expected to go on sale in the UK in 2011.

MG is best known for its two-seat open sports cars, but the brand is now looking to extend its scope and the MG3 looks set to play a big role in that.

According to a new research by accountancy firm Baker Tilly, some three-quarters of dealers fear the recession will be much more protracted than recent forecasts have shown.

The overall winner will be given the opportunity of going on placement with General Motors (GM) Europe’s design team in Russelsheim.

Richard Shaw, advanced chief designer at Opel/Vauxhall, is championing the competition as a former student of the university.

He said: "We are very committed to helping tomorrow’s car designers explore their skills on a practical level."

"As many design challenges focus on exterior form, we thought to challenge the students to mainly focus on what they feel the interior environments of tomorrow will need to encompass," he added.

Thanks to improved sales and orders at the end of last year, GM made the decision to retain the Opel and Vauxhall brand.

The Mazda MX-5 20th anniversary Limited Edition car will go on sale on March 1st 2010 at £16,850 and comes complete with ten new pieces of equipment worth more than £650 as well as new colours.

Worldwide, more than 850,000 MX-5s have been sold since it was first released in 1990 and it has received more than 170 awards.

Paul Harris will move to Singapore to replace Colin Kelly who, after eight years, is to re-establish his own business in Canada. He is to be supported by a team in Beijing.
