New Sportage from Kia

The new Sportage crossover from Kia is available for eager motorists to buy with the hope it follow the success of the early First Edition version which went on sale in the summer.

Incorporated in the range is a choice of four engines – including a brand new 1.6 litre direct injection petrol, and a 1.7 litre turbodiesel units.

These two engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive while the 2.0 litre engine is either married with a choice of a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic on the petrol, or six-speed manual or six-speed automatic on the diesel.

“The allure of a Kia should extend well beyond the fact that it moves people from one place to the other,” said Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer.

The 16 model range shows similarities with the Kia 1, 2 and 3 trim designations, with additional car parts featuring a fully integrated 7 inch touch screen satellite navigation with reversing camera and upgraded audio sound system.

Mr Schreyer began work on the new Sportage over three years ago where he and his team discovered an unidentified crossover type vehicle combining the stance of a compact with a sleeker and greener feel.

It is hoped to be a favourite for young families or the young at heart with requirements meeting those who lead busy, primarily urban-centric lifestyles.

It sports a ribbed roof, chunky door handles, LED day-time running lights and large wing mirrors making it tough to manage difficult conditions as well as city roads.

CO2 emissions start from 135g/km and for the economy version this reduces to up to 54.4mpg.  Prices for this range start from £16,645.

Cheap Car Parts for Costly Repairs

Mechanical labour costs have risen again according to a new survey as some motorists claim to have been charged up to £190 an hour.

While labour costs are high for mechanical repair work, motorists can save money by acquiring cheap car parts online to help reduce the overall bill.

The national average cost of garage labour has risen by 5.81 percent to cost on average £74.82 over the past year the annual Warranty Direct Labour Rates Survey revealed.

Franchised dealers were also found to be nearly 40 percent more expensive than their independent competitors.

Independent mechanics now charge on average £55.90 compared to £52.69 in 2009 while the labour rate for franchised dealers rose from £87.19 to £90.59.

“The once relentless upward march of labour rates appears to have started again after a slight dip last year,” said Duncan McClure Fisher, Warranty Direct spokesperson.

“To avoid paying above paying above inflationary rises, motorists need to shop around, and not be afraid to push their preferred repairer to charge them less.”

However, despite the national rise some regions have experienced falls as prices of mechanical work has fallen by 2.5 percent while the north showed the biggest drops.

Northumberland and Lanarkshire mechanics were found to have reduced their hourly rate by 12.7 percent and 12.6 percent respectively.

Surrey meanwhile is the most expensive place to get repair work done on your vehicle in the UK as the average cost per hour equated to £87.59, while the highest hourly rate was found in a franchised dealer in Hertfordshire where they charged £190.35.

Fiat Car Parts High in Demand

Fiat unveils its new TwinAir concept due to transform petrol powered engines with advanced technology to aid low fuel consumption.

The 875 cc two-cylinder engine claims to be the cleanest quantity production petrol engine in the world and yet also providing satisfying rev power.

The new car part in its 85bhp version of the engine is set to debut in the UK this month with the Fiat 500, combining essential requirements of the 21st Century car owner by downsizing for city driving, reducing fuel consumption without sacrificing power for driver enjoyment.

More than a fifth of future Fiat 500 sales are forecast to be TwinAir versions Fiat predicts, as it weighs just 85 kg with 95g/km of CO2.

It also boasts 145 Nm of torque at a low 1900rpm and compared with Fiat’s best-selling 1.2 litre petrol engine in the Fiat 500 the TwinAir delivers 23 percent more power combined with a 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.

The results of this new technology have been down to FPT’s MultiAir technology which played a major part in reducing the consumption and emissions Fiat claim.

The MultiAir combined with a turbocharger helps to optimise performance at low revs while reductions in weight and size help boost performance and responsiveness.

The timing change has also been adapted influencing the reduced engine running costs as it is maintenance-free while a balancing countershaft reduces vibrations to give the smoothness and refinement of a four-cylinder car.
