Top 10 Car Parts Which Need Replacing Most Often

New data reveals the top 10 car parts most likely to need replacing due to wear and tear with problems with car suspension topping the list.

Around one in three repairs recorded by Warranty Direct were due to vehicles aged between three and seven years old needing replacement suspension car parts.

Following suspension arms in the list were ball joints accounting for 3.89 percent of all repairs, steering racks with 3.88 percent, turbos with 2.18 percent, water pumps with 2.07 percent, wheel bearings with 1.86 percent and fuel pumps with 1.38 percent.

At the bottom of the list of car parts needing replacing was flywheels, accounting for 1.05 percent of all repairs, followed by injectors with 0.86 percent and automatic gearboxes with 0.38 percent.

“It’s not reasonable to expect manufacturer warranties to cover parts that wear out,” said Duncan McClure Fisher, a Warranty Direct spokesperson.

“On the flip side, motorists are not necessarily aware that, as their car gets older and wear-related failures become more frequent, they won’t necessarily be covered unless they have a policy that covers wear.”

In another study by the insurance company the cost of getting a mechanic to fix a car was shown to be on the rise again.

The survey showed some motorists are being charged up to £190 an hour while the average cost has risen by 5.81 percent to £74.82 over the last year.

The research has shown owning a car has never been more expensive especially when things go wrong.

Audi A5 Named Best Coupe

The Audi A5 has been named the best coupe, according to latest research, beating stiff competition from BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the process.

Taking 21 percent of the vote, the Audi A5 boasts some of the most sought after car parts on the coupe market.

The top ten most searched for coupes on the website ContractHireAndLeasing.com were put on a list for personal and business contract hire customers to vote for their favourite.

The main rival coming in at second place was the BMW 3-Series coupe with a respectable 19 percent of the vote while the Volkswagen Scirocco came in at third with 12 percent.

“The Audi A5 has been widely praised since it was first launched and with changes added to the range in 2009 only enhanced its appeal and Audi is still reaping the rewards,” said Richard Lawton, the website’s spokesperson.

“While the competition was close in the form of the BMW 3 Series, the A5 has been consistently higher in the search rankings.”

The A5 Coupe was launched in 2007 and is available to consumers with a choice of diesel and petrol engines, and transmissions and extras to suit all budgets.  While also available with Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive.

Following the top three were the Audi TT with 10 percent of the votes, the Alfa Romeo Brera with nine percent, Volkswagen Passat CC also with nine percent, and the Mercedes-Benz CLC with six percent.

Honda Car Parts Face the Clean Test

Honda has entered three of its cleanest cars to compete in the first RAC Future Car Challenge this month. Find out what Honda car parts make it so efficient.

The models set to partake in the London to Brighton event include the new Honda Jazz Hybrid along with the hydrogen powered FCX Clarity fuel cell car and their sporty hybrid CR-Z.

All the cars entered in the race will be measured on the energy they use on the route with the vehicle using the least over the 60 mile run to be crowned the winner.

The route is based on the same route taken by Honda Motor founder Soichiro Honda when he tackled the event in 1985.

If you own a Honda motor and require a part to replace a worn or damaged one 247 Spares will be able to accommodate you.

The new Jazz model features a petrol-electric IMA system to lower emissions to 104 g/km and improve fuel economy to 64.2 mpg.

The Honda Jazz is made of hybrid technology with car parts aimed at increasing fuel efficiency while also retaining the practical characteristics non-hybrid versions offer.

Meanwhile the FCX Clarity is also supporting the Jazz on the race and features the ability to emit no harmful exhaust emissions with only water vapour coming out instead.

The car also offers a driving range of 270 miles before needing to be refuelled which takes 3-5 minutes.

The Honda CR-Z also encompasses all the benefits of advanced, low emission hybrid technology in a sporty hybrid coupe.

This car was launched earlier this year and is currently available to buy from £16,999, while the Honda Jazz is set to be available early next year.

Jaguar XJ Best Scottish Luxury Car

The Scottish Car of the Year awards saw the Jaguar XJ named 2010’s Best Luxury Car and the new Kia Sportage the Car of the Year.

The Jaguar XJ was tested by motoring experts from the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW) beating the BMW 5 Series GT and the new Audi A8 to win.

Car parts attributed to the luxurious nature of the XJ model include a panoramic roof with electrically operated blinds, Jaguar 400W sound system with a hard disk drive and a media hub.

The Jaguar XJ is available through Jaguar dealerships throughout the UK priced from £53,900.

“Today’s breed of luxury cars have to be as impressive to drive as they are to be driven in and no car showcases this better than our 2010 winner,” said John Murdock, the ASMX president.

Meanwhile the Kia Sportage landed its first major victory since it went on sale recently, winning over the Scottish journalists with what was praised as a blend of style, quality, value and its unrivalled fully-transferable seven year warranty.

“With our rugged terrain and harsh winters Scotland’s demand for SUVs has always been strong and that is likely to remain the case with vehicles as talented as the new Sportage,” continued John Murdock.

The new Sportage is a two-wheel drive car boasting a 1.6 gasoline direct injection engine or a 1.7 turbo diesel version.

Other features include the ability for car buyers to choose between a 6 speed manual transmission or a 6 speed automatic, and can be purchased for a reasonable £16,645.

New Car Sales Fell in October

New car sales fell in October new figures show, equating to the biggest decline since May 2009 as the nation prepares to budget for the impending public spending cuts.

The research by British Car Auctions (BCA) on motorists’ plans to replace their car and car parts showed surprising regional variance.

As 54 percent of motorists said they would not replace their car during the current economic climate, this dropped to just 38 percent for Londoners.

A further 49 percent in the North do not plan to replace their motors closely followed by those in Scotland and the West Midlands at 50 percent.

While those in East Anglia were found to be the least likely to replace their car as 64 percent admitted to this and when they do start to look, better fuel consumption will be at the top of the list of priority features.

“Given the continuing economic pressures, the reticence of motorists to commit to their next vehicle purchase is understandable,” said Tim Naylor, BCA spokesman.

“If their current car becomes uneconomical to run or repair, you can be sure funds will be found from somewhere to replace it.”

Those in the South West were also found to feel strongly about the fuel efficiency of their next motor as 40 percent agreed this would be the main criteria for choosing a new car, compared to 28 percent and 29 percent of those in Yorkshire & Humberside and the North West respectively.

Car Crashes More Likely on Friday’s Rush Hour

Friday’s evening rush hour is the time when road users are more likely to have an accident in November new figures show.

The sixty minutes between 5pm and 6pm at the end of the working week were found by Accident Exchange to be the worst time of the week for crashes.

The analysis of over 200,000 qualified incidents over the last five years showed Wednesday was the second worst day with a 16.1 percent of the total accidents happening on that day after Fridays’ 17.9 percent.

The day which showed the lowest percentage of total accidents was a Sunday with 8.8 percent and then Saturday with 11.2 percent.

Furthermore, motorists are being urged to check car parts as November was found to be the most dangerous month for driving as the largest percentage of accidents happened during this time of year.

“The statistics are just a word of warning at a time when driving conditions start to change for the worst for the winter months or so,” said Lee Woodley of Accident Exchange.

“The factors contributing to an accident are so numerous that the best advice is to remain vigilant at all times and drive to the conditions around you.”

While 9.2 percent accidents occurred during November, December closely followed with 8.9 percent and June with 8.7 percent, while August saw the least at 7.3 percent.

The results suggest a combination of the wettest month on the calendar and drivers still adjusting to darker road conditions are to blame for the spike.

As 5-6pm was recorded as the most dangerous hour to drive in, this was followed by the hour between 3-4pm and then 4-5pm, with the smallest percentage of accidents occurring between the hours of 4-5am with 0.17 percent of the total accidents.

SEAT Alhambra Launched

The SEAT Alhambra launches in UK showrooms this week, the new successor to the original seven-seater MPV people carrier.

Branded the SEAT Alhambra, this new model is said to have had a complete car parts make-over both inside and out.

The Alhambra is the largest car SEAT has made measuring in at more than 4.8 metres stem to stem, and is also boasted as the company’s most luxurious and technologically advanced.

It is one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in the people-carrier range sporting two sliding rear doors so it is more practical for moving objects.

The new model has simplified the way in which car owners can remove second and third row seats, so through the pull of a lever all five second and third row seats move into the car’s floor making space for extra luggage.

In terms of storage, like most MPVs, the vehicle comes with cupholders, tray tables, cubbies and pockets to hold family belongings.  Another hi-tech gadget includes high beam assist technology, which automatically switches between full and dipped beam depending on the oncoming traffic and street lighting.

Customers will also have the option to have Park Assist technology fitted in the vehicle for those who order them from December 2010 onwards.

The technology aids the driver by identifying suitable parking spaces and then automatically attends to the steering while the driver simply controls the accelerator, clutch and brake.

Prices for the new model line start at £22,330 RRP.

Skoda’s Fresh New Line

Skoda is introducing a fresh four wheel drive on their Octavia and Superb model lines available this month.

The new models will be offered in automatic DSG transmission with an array of impressive new car parts notably the 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp for hatchback and estate versions.

The company state the new design is aimed to tackle challenging conditions which two-wheel drives would be unable to handle.

The power distribution is controlled electronically by a fourth-generation Haldex clutch so under normal track conditions, tests show 96 percent of the total power is directed to the front axle.

When confronted with adverse weather conditions this Haldex system reacts in a split second to redirect power to the wheels with better traction so the ability to drive safety is significantly increased.

In summer the 4 x4 technology is able to continue its safe driving capabilities by making towing caravans and trailers easier and safer to manoeuvre and rear wheels are disengaged when not required so fuel consumption is reduced.

The prices start at £21,705 and the new vehicles are available to order to those in the UK from the end of November 2010.

The full range of models include: Octavia Estate 4×4, Octavia Estate Scout, Superb Hatch SE, Superb Hatch Elegance, Superb Estate SE, and Superb Estate Elegance.
