The Vauxhall brand will be revived thanks, in part, to a £270 million loan guarantee from the UK government.

In order to secure operations at British Vauxhall plants, General Motors (GM) will receive the government funding.

Opel operations will also be saved as other European governments have also pledged funding, which, with the UK money, totals £2.4 billion.

Across Europe, GM, which was planning to sell Opel last year after going into bankruptcy protection, will be cutting 8,300 jobs in total, according to the BBC.

None of the 2,166 staff at the Vauxhall plant in Cheshire, Ellesmere Port, which makes the Astra, will lose their jobs.

Jobs at the Luton plant, which produces Vauxhall, Renault and Nissan vans, will also be safeguarded by the deal, according to union leaders.

Discussions between the UK government, GM and other European governments offering funding will continue in order to finalise funding terms and arrangements, to implement as part of the business plan.ADNFCR-2490-ID-19669837-ADNFCR
