The government-funded scrappage scheme, which was due to finish at the end of this month, has been suspended by a number of leading car manufacturers.
Fiat, Audi, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia have all suspended orders and started forming waiting lists last week after selling all their cars allocated with money from the initiative.
Last week, Vauxhall withdrew from the government scheme, launching a similar one of its own in its place.
The last allocation of a few hundred cars for each manufacturer has been given but that allowance is expected to be used up within a few days due to a backlog of orders.
Some manufacturers, including Honda, Citroën and Peugeot, still have funds remaining, which they expect to last until the official end date.
The scheme, which was implemented last May, has provided the new car market with a welcome boost during the economic downturn.
It was meant to provide short-term relief to the UK automotive industry, providing car buyers with a £2,000 incentive to buy a new car.
