Consumer confidence is boosted by the voluntary accreditation technicians can undergo through the Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) scheme.

More than 80 per cent of the population in the UK cannot tell the difference between a good technician and a bad one, according to a recent survey.

The voluntary ATA scheme, which has just accredited its 20,000th technician, hopes its initiative will enable motorists to feel more confident about repairs in the automotive industry.

Technicians who take part in the scheme have to prove their competence through a series of tests of their auto skills.

They are then bound by an ethical code of conduct after becoming accredited through the initiative.

Despite only starting five years ago, each day ten new members gain their ATA award.

Executive chair of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), Sarah Sillars OBE, said consumer demand for honest technicians was evident from how successful the scheme had proved to be.ADNFCR-2490-ID-19682377-ADNFCR
