The United Nations (UN) has taken the decision to adopt a decade of action on road safety to address problems on the roads.
Co-sponsored by the governments of more than 90 countries worldwide, the campaign will run from 2011 to 2020, looking at the road safety crisis.
During the decade, all states supporting the initiative will commit to action on various different road safety issues.
Some of these issues include the development and enforcement of legislation on key risk factors such as limiting speed, reducing drink-driving, wearing seatbelts, child restraints and motorcycle helmets.
Improved emergency trauma care and upgraded road and vehicle safety standards will also be addressed.
The campaign aims to promote road safety education and improve road safety management in general in order to achieve the goal of improved safety on the roads.
UK road safety charity, Brake, is supporting the worldwide initiative. Campaigns officer, Ellen Booth, said she hopes the Department for Transport commits to a "zero harm vision" for Britain as part of the decade of action.
