The high-performance SM coupe from Citroen is celebrating its 40th anniversary today.

First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, the luxury sports tourer was the result of an alliance between Citroen and Maserati.

It was recognised as an exceptional vehicle in the 1970s, winning third place in the European Car of the Year awards in 1971, which was won by another Citroen, the GS.

The SM was one of the fastest front-wheel drive models during its heyday, powered by a V6 engine made by the Maserati luxury car brand.

It could reach a top speed of 137mph and was a competitive model in motorsport too, winning its first race in 1971.

Pioneering in terms of its technology, a new type of variable assist power steering made its debut in the model, allowing drivers to manoeuvre more easily at low speeds and improving control and handling at higher ones.

Citroen is also celebrating its own anniversary with the brand designing and manufacturing new models for the past 90 years.ADNFCR-2490-ID-19664829-ADNFCR
