Toyota will repair the accelerator pedals of eight European models it recalled.
The recalls followed a number of incidents with the Toyota car part in the US meaning that European models had to be recalled as well as a precaution.
Excess friction on the pedals causes them to stick in some cases but the manufacturer hopes that shipments of car parts arriving in Europe next week will get the repair process underway.
Toyota has said that firm and steady brake application is the best way to combat an accelerator pedal that sticks. Drivers should then pull over and seek help from road-side assistance or a Toyota retailer.
Tadashi Arashima, president and chief executive of Toyota Motor Europe, said: "We understand that the current situation is creating concerns, and we deeply regret it. We would also like to reassure customers: the potential accelerator pedal issue only occurs in very rare circumstances."
The announcement follows the company’s recall of approximately 4.2 million vehicles which were feared to be at risk of having their pedals lodged under floor mats.
