Holland’s Spyker Cars has switched production of its new Aileron to Coventry as it looks to cut costs and take advantage of the city’s skilled workforce.

Just last month, the bespoke car manufacturer announced its intention to acquire troubled Swedish brand Saab from General Motors as it moves to expand its presence in the European car market.

Now, the company has confirmed that it is to concentrate production of its new supercar at the CPP Manufacturing factory in Coventry, with a further 40 workers to be taken on in order to oversee an increase in the rate of production to five vehicles a week.

Announcing the development, Spyker Cars founder Victor Muller said: "More than half our components are sourced from the UK, so moving here will bring us considerable efficiency savings which is vital for a car company of our size."

Plans are also in place to develop good professional links with local universities so as to benefit from a suitably-qualified workforce.

Spyker was launched in its present form in 1999, since when it has produced the C8 and the C8 Laviolette and the C12.
