Next month’s Geneva Motor Show will see the unveiling of the hybrid Porsche 911 GT3 R ahead of racing at Nurburgring in May.
Porsche is promising that the vehicle will take the sports coupe’s evolution "to new levels in motor sport", with it due to compete in a 24-hour race around the Nurburgring Nordschleife on May 15th and 16th.
Developed especially for racing, the 911 GT3 R Hybrdid features an electric flywheel power generator, which is mounted alongside the driver in the vehicle’s cockpit.
It is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes and can store energy mechanically. Its rotors are capable of spinning at speeds of 40,000 rpm.
Porsche has said it isn’t a priority for the 911 to GT3 R win in Germany – instead, it will treat the event as a "racing laboratory" that will allow it to develop hybrid technology further in its range of sports cars.
The manufacturer is currently offering all-weather driver training at the Porsche Experience Centre in Silverstone.
