A new scheme from the Freight Transport Association (FTA) which will see the body publicly report its carbon footprint has been welcomed by secretary of state for transport Lord Adonis.
In a letter confirming the Department for Transport’s (DfT) support for the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme he acknowledged the need to reduce carbon emissions from the logistics sector, which accounts for 30 per cent of overall domestic transport emissions.
Rachael Dillon, the FTA’s climate change manager, commented that the initiative has potential for identifying a credible reduction target for the logistics sector.
"Together with the DfT we will develop a robust and consistent carbon measurement and reporting method that will be fair, accurate and eminently useful in the interests of mitigating the sector’s environmental impact," she added.
In other environmental automotive news, this month Ford announced that it prevented 70 tonnes worth of unnecessary landfill last year thanks to a scheme which recycled 23,000 accident-damaged bumpers.
