Motorists can take a number of simple steps to protect themselves against car crime, despite the advancement of alarm systems and video surveillance.

This is according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which warned that these developments could cause drivers to become complacent.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said that, while it seems obvious, motorists should, where possible, park in a well lit, busy area and ensure that all valuables are hidden away.

"Never underestimate the determination of some thieves: don’t leave your car keys in a bowl or on a rack by the door – one of the most common methods of stealing a car is using a pole to reach through the letterbox to get the keys," he warned.

Mr Rodger also recommended clearing out the garage and making room for the car, while drivers filling up at the petrol station are reminded to not leave their keys in the ignition.

The IAM warned earlier this month that too many drivers are putting themselves and others at risk by driving while talking on a mobile phone.
