Ford prevented 70 tonnes worth of unnecessary landfill last year thanks to a recycling initiative.

Dealers removed 23,000 accident-damaged bumpers from cars which were subsequently recycled into new bumpers and other plastic components.

In the past, dealers have simply thrown bumpers away but now they are put in a container and collected by Ford for free.

According to Stephen Russell, operations director for the Ford Ringways, the dealership saved around £15,000 a year in one case.

Ford’s end of life vehicle manager Mike Rivers said: "Our UK bumper recycling scheme has been another Ford environmental success, with thousands of bumpers retrieved from Ford dealers and recycled into new plastic parts last year. This has reused tonnes of plastic which would otherwise have gone to landfill."

Ford announced recently that it is to build a 120m wind turbine on 475 acres of land next to its Dagenham manufacturing plant by the Thames.ADNFCR-2490-ID-19606270-ADNFCR
