A series of adverts by the THINK! campaign has been launched by the Department for Transport today (February 1st).
The shocking adverts show what happens to the body in the event of a crash without a seat belt on.
Firstly, the car crashes and stops. The body then keeps moving and hits the inside of the car. Finally, the body stops but its internal organs keep moving and can rupture under the force of the impact.
This can happen at speed as low as 30mph and the £1.3 million campaign aims to highlight that through shock tactics which mean that it can only be broadcast after 9pm.
Road safety minister Paul Clark said: "This campaign reminds drivers that – no matter how short their journey or how slowly they are driving – they are risking their life if they set off without putting their seat belt on."
Seat belts first became compulsory in European cars in 1965.
