One provider of roadside assistance is warning drivers to prepare for winter breakdowns.
Mondial Assistance states that the most common call-out in winter is to a flat battery – and highlights that ensuring a vehicle is better maintained could prevent such breakdowns.
Lee Taylor, automotive director for the company in the UK, says: "Driving conditions in Britain during the winter months can be both difficult and hazardous. Yet, with a little maintenance, it’s possible to minimise the risk you expose yourself to the open road."
He added that the niggles that motorists may have been well aware of in the lead up to winter could turn into real problems as the cold sets in.
Tyre checking was cited as important, in terms of the depth of tread and pressure, so motorists’ vehicles do not lose their grip on the roads in icy conditions.
Mr Taylor added that rather than be stranded during the colder months, car owners should take a little time to follow breakdown prevention advice instead.
The AA have also been advising drivers from the start of October to check that lights are working so you do not become one of the many "one-eyed monsters" on the road.
