Volvo officials claim to able to trace their green thinking back to 1972.

The company’s chief executive officer back then was said to believe that the brand could help solve the problem of pollution, according to its environmental director.

As a motor company, Volvo claims to have consistently measured its motor’s life cycles in order to be able to come up with ways to reduce the negative environmental impact it has.

It claims to now focus on lessening the brand’s climate impact and reliance on fossil fuels.

Raul Carlson, an international consultant to industry and a lecturer on product life cycle issues, commented on business attitudes to green solutions.

He said: "I cannot see how any serious company today could work with product development without considering environmental issues."

Mr Carlson added: "Most actually save money because they find some wastage, some meaningless extra energy use in their operations."

Volvo operates a young people’s Eco Challenge for sailing clubs, giving £1,000 grants to those which embark on a green task – aged ten to 16 years old.
