One manufacturer has produced a new green accessory for a completely different type of Volvo spare part.

The Commute Greener device counts your emissions using a mobile phone technology.

Gothenburg in Sweden is the first city worldwide to order the service for its employees.

Commuters who want to enjoy the technology can use an iPhone as a medium.

By downloading the application you can register the mode of travel you take to work and then the programme will tell you how much CO2 is emitted as a result of the journeys.

Alongside this is an online community website which also features competitions.

Magnus Holmqvist at Volvo IT, said: "Our tests have shown that individuals can quickly reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30 per cent using Commute Greener."

If you currently do not own an iPhone access to the application must be ordered via an organisation, city or company for its customers, inhabitants or employees.

Earlier this year the manufacturer announced another green initiative which will see it make a donation to offset project Myclimate, in the name of the winning team who virtually drive around the world in 80 days using only their Facebook friends.
