Did Volkswagen parts lead the Polo to success?

A broad range of engine and trim options have been cited as some of the reasons why the Polo is one of the best vehicles of its type on the market.

The Volkswagen parts were highlighted by the judges of the Small Car of the Year award, which formed part of the Scottish Car of the Year event.

St Andrews was the location for the motor’s success, after it was tested for performance in what was described as an extremely competitive category.

According to the panel, the quality of the vehicle, together with its price, took it to pole position.

"If only everything in life were as reliable as our 2009 champion," they added.

Director of Volkswagen UK Chris Craft also commented, saying the win was a "tremendous honour".

Earlier this month saw the manufacturer announce various car parts that were being incorporated into a new ersion of the Passat.

The Highline Plus is set to include gadgets and gizmos such as a chrome grille and Bluetooth connectivity.

Subaru ‘makes an impression’

One car owner has taken over a decade to trade-in his Subaru.

The exchange happened 11 years after the car owner had won a competition which earned him his first Subaru Legacy.

Chris Flynn from Middlesbrough was said to refer to the Legacy as being the perfect car for him and so when it came to needing a new car, it was his only choice.

He said: "Not once did I have a single problem with the car, so when I heard about the government scrappage scheme … there was only one option – another Subaru Legacy."

Mr Flynn is now the proud owner of a 2.0-litre Tourer and a spokesperson for the company said he hoped more people from Middlesbrough would be choosing the brand when its dealership opens in the city in March of next year.

The winner stated that he is especially impressed with the interior of the vehicle and its quality and added that the motor is both practical and spacious.

Subaru is currently offering a five year warranty on the Impreza 1.5 and 2.0 litre petrol cars.

Mercedes-Benz hosts free track day

Mercedes-Benz has celebrated recent success with a free event it held.

More than 15,000 attendees turned up at the Brooklands tracks for the occasion, hosted by Mercedes-Benz World.

Lewis Hamilton – the Formula 1 winner for last year – was present with Heikki Kovalainen to give spectators a taste of their skills behind the wheel. Finding some Mercedes spares could have been necessary after Hamilton was said to perform ‘doughnuts’ on the track.

He said of the event: "The track here is so much fun. I cannot believe how many people turned up here, but every time we have an amazing turn-out and put an incredible show on for everyone."

The facility hosts exhibits, interactive activities and simulator rides for visitors to make use of.

Guests also have the opportunity to drive a Mercedes-Benz around the circuit of the track, or take the car off-road across ten acres of terrain.

This year Mercedes-Benz also claimed the title of London Fashion Week’s official car.

Prize-winning Lotus “quite brilliant”

A Lotus was recently recognised for being "quite brilliant" by the editor of a publication which gave it an award.

David Vivian contributes to EVO magazine and said the Evora was a "worthy winner" of the Car of the Year 2009 gong.

It was put to the test alongside motors from luxury brands such as Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini, beating them all to first place with a top score of 96 points out of a possible 100.

EVO staffers challenged each of the final contenders in the Isle of Skye, Scotland, where they were driven over three days and 1,000 miles.

Motoring editor John Barker echoed Mr Vivian’s comments by saying that the Evora was "magical".

"It was even better than I remembered – a bit smoother, a bit quicker and even sweeter dynamically, too. It’s a beguiling car," he remarked.

News of the award follows an announcement earlier this year that Lotus had also been highlighted for its technical prowess.

The manufacturer won the Judges’ Special Award at the British Engineering Excellence Awards.

Are you planning to scrap your car?

Newer motors usually include advanced car parts that help a driver reduce their carbon footprint and experience better performance.

So for those who are looking to replace their current auto, using the scrappage scheme could be more worthwhile than ever before, given new figures from WhatGreenCar.

The website said this week that the cash for bangers initiative has turned out to be greener than anticipated, with the CO2 emissions for a scrapped motor totalling 179 g/km – and the equivalent figure for a new car less than 140 g/km.

And if a car is cleaner and greener, it can also help people save money at the pump.

However, the company said with the possibility that the scrappage scheme could finish in February 2010 there has never been a better time to turn in the old set of wheels for a better one.

"There isn’t much time left," the company added.

Drivers who are worried about their motor’s effect on the planet but are not able to trade in their vehicle may want to check out what car parts could help to make it more efficient.
