A broad range of engine and trim options have been cited as some of the reasons why the Polo is one of the best vehicles of its type on the market.

The Volkswagen parts were highlighted by the judges of the Small Car of the Year award, which formed part of the Scottish Car of the Year event.

St Andrews was the location for the motor’s success, after it was tested for performance in what was described as an extremely competitive category.

According to the panel, the quality of the vehicle, together with its price, took it to pole position.

"If only everything in life were as reliable as our 2009 champion," they added.

Director of Volkswagen UK Chris Craft also commented, saying the win was a "tremendous honour".

Earlier this month saw the manufacturer announce various car parts that were being incorporated into a new ersion of the Passat.

The Highline Plus is set to include gadgets and gizmos such as a chrome grille and Bluetooth connectivity.
