Campaign to protect ‘good-willed work drivers’

A Manchester-based charity has joined the Driving for Better Business campaign.

It is hoped that the Seashell Trust’s involvement will spur other such organisations to come on board.

The government-backed campaign is currently facilitated by RoadSafe.

It states that there are an estimated 200 road deaths each week as a result of crashes. Many of such accidents involve so-called work drivers meaning that more and more employees are dying when behind the wheel on behalf of an employer.

Recently-appointed chief executive of the organisation, Mark Geraghty, is said to championing the charity’s road risk management involvement.

He said: "The Seashell Trust and its members of staff have an extremely good work-related road safety record.

"The trust’s work-related road safety activity and good safety record has enabled insurance premiums to reduce."

Mr Geraghty added that new legislation has meant the need for updating the company’s procedures with regards to staff who voluntarily use their motors for work-related purposes.

Driving for Better Business is both guided and supported by a stakeholder forum and steering group.

Audi says ‘no driver necessary’

Audi has announced a vehicle from its range which does not need a driver.

The driverless TTS Coupe quattro is set to take on the Pike Peak Hill Climb in the states.

It marks 30 years after the first appearance of Audi’s quattro permanent four-wheel-drive technology, which was sure to have fitted completely different Audi car parts.

Dr Huhnke commented: "While a less experienced driver may freeze or make the wrong ‘correction’, the Autonomous TTS would be able to take over or guide the driver to escape from a critical situation."

He added that Audi thinks such a vehicle can react in the same way as a professional driver would – and in the future better than a professional would.

Dr Huhnke gave the reason for this, stating that the car would not be distracted from its course by things such as difficult driving conditions, which would make an ordinary driver inattentive.

Earlier this year the manufacturer reported success in China as it stated it had surpassed the previous year’s unit sales volumes, making it the most successful year in China for Audi.

Volvo gets green mobile technology

One manufacturer has produced a new green accessory for a completely different type of Volvo spare part.

The Commute Greener device counts your emissions using a mobile phone technology.

Gothenburg in Sweden is the first city worldwide to order the service for its employees.

Commuters who want to enjoy the technology can use an iPhone as a medium.

By downloading the application you can register the mode of travel you take to work and then the programme will tell you how much CO2 is emitted as a result of the journeys.

Alongside this is an online community website which also features competitions.

Magnus Holmqvist at Volvo IT, said: "Our tests have shown that individuals can quickly reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30 per cent using Commute Greener."

If you currently do not own an iPhone access to the application must be ordered via an organisation, city or company for its customers, inhabitants or employees.

Earlier this year the manufacturer announced another green initiative which will see it make a donation to offset project Myclimate, in the name of the winning team who virtually drive around the world in 80 days using only their Facebook friends.

Nissan says ‘Cube not for everyone’

If you are going online to look for Nissan car parts you could take a look at one of the brand’s new models too.

The Cube from the manufacturer features its own website in anticipation of the car’s arrival.

The make says that the Cube car is far from ordinary and by having the website it gives interested customers the chance to look at the vehicle closely before getting their hands on the model.

Not anybody can get onto the site though – interested buyers must successfully answer questions about their lifestyle, or have been given a code for access.

Only those deemed to seek quality of life and have original taste will make the grade.

The reward for meeting the criteria will be the opportunity to find out what the new Cube is all about and will gain entry onto the CubeList.

For those interested in buying a Nissan car there are certain models that currently benefit from being on the government’s scrappage scheme, including the Cabstar and the Micra.
