A new video available online sees motoring TV presenter and journalist Quentin Willson alerting viewers to the dangers of unsafe and neglected tyres.
These car parts are subject to legal measurements and can increase a driver’s risk if not cared for properly. Willson pointed out that in the wetter months of the year, it is "essential" to ensure tyres are properly maintained.
In the clip, he demonstrates an initiative called Lifesaver in your Pocket, which has been developed by TyreSafe in order to encourage drivers to check their tyres’ tread depths.
He shows the difference between stopping distances behind the wheel of two cars – one with legal tread depth, the other illegal.
"This graphic illustration of how tyre tread depth affects a car’s ability to stop is very compelling," explained chairman of the organisation Stuart Jackson, adding that by taking only a few minutes each month, motorists can make sure they comply with the law and stay safe.
Drivers concerned about any other car parts may want to check their manufacturer’s manual or contact a professional
