New codes of practice have been granted approval by important industry bodies and the government.
The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair has come about as the result of reported consumer unease relating to quality of work, customer service and pricing.
A system will mean consumer interests can be protected, as the guidelines will assist them in finding reputable garages which perform to high standards, with over 5,000 establishments having already signed up.
Associations, including the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) -which promotes and supports the interests of the UK automotive industry – and the Retail Motor Industry Federation have supported the code.
Chris Mason, Motor Code’s director, said: "We are pleased to have been recognised by [the] government and such influential industry bodies.
"A fifth of the UK’s garages have already signed up to the Service and Repair Code, ten per cent of which are independent service centres."
He added that the extra approval from crucial bodies would be likely to make more garages want to join the codes scheme.
