Vehicle owners who do not want to end up having to shell out to repair damaged car parts may be well advised to take particular care when negotiating rural roads in the coming weeks.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has claimed driving in the countryside could prove especially hazardous while farmers are harvesting their crops.

It explained transporting produce from fields often leaves muddy trails on roads.

The group warned such dirt can prove slippery and could cause cars to skid.

Figures cited by the organisation show there were 696 mud-related accidents last year.

Chief examiner Peter Rodger said motorists need to demonstrate caution.

"Drop back from the vehicle ahead and allow yourself more time to see the road surface – and keep away from the mud splattered up onto your windscreen at the same time," he advised.

Meanwhile, IAM recently suggested checking tyre tread depth on a regular basis could also help drivers avoid collisions.
