A recent auction saw a car with over 500,000 miles on the clock bought for £825.
The Ford Mondeo Estate TDCI 115 LX Estate’s milometer read 532,491 on its display – a figure BCA London said was one of the highest it had seen in a long time.
UK operations director of the company Simon Hemstock described the distance the Mondeo had travelled and its performance as "exceptional".
Selling it by auction helped it to reach what is actually good value, he added, because a 200,000-mile version has a CAP book price of £1,225 – so the £825 tag was a steal.
"It outperformed all expectations," Mr Hemstock remarked. "The live competitive bidding that takes place during the auction process is critical to achieving the true worth of any asset."
A journey of 500,000 miles could take someone to the moon and back, with enough distance left for a trip around the block.
However, those not planning to take an inter-galactic trip anytime soon could just ensure that their motor’s engine is in good condition and ready to travel a long way if necessary.
