Hyundai intends to become a world leader when it comes to producing electric cars.

The manufacturer is due to unveil a battery-powered i10 at this month’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.

It revealed the model has a range of 99.4 mph and can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 15 seconds.

The vehicle uses lithium ion polymer batteries and to charge the auto fully takes five hours.

Production is due to get underway in Korea in 2010.

Commenting on the future of the model, product planning manager Hans-Ulrich Goebel stated: "We believe there will be a big market [for the i10 Electric] but the European market is not there yet."

Meanwhile, Hyundai spokesman Thomas Burkle said: "We aim to become world leaders in this field."

In other news, it was recently revealed the manufacturer sold more cars to UK retail customers last month than any other company, overtaking both Vauxhall and Ford.
