Manufacturers building autos for the UK market may have had to up production of car parts as a result of the scrappage scheme, if new figures are anything to go by.

Government data has revealed in excess of 150,000 orders have been placed as a result of the programme so far.

Secretary of state for business Lord Mandelson said the initiative had provided a much-needed boost to the automotive industry, as well as helping out the country’s motorists.

"The scheme has contributed to the 13.5 per cent jump in car manufacturing and the first growth in new car registrations since April 2008," he pointed out.

According to the government, scrappage sales have been spread out across the UK much as would have been expected.

It explained the areas where the highest number of orders have been placed are regions where there are the greatest concentration of drivers.

Meanwhile, the Retail Motor Industry Federation recently agreed that the scrappage scheme is having a positive impact on the country.
