People who replace worn car parts to ensure their autos are as safe as possible only to find themselves at risk of an accident because of a tailgater should try and diffuse the situation, it has been suggested.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists issued this advice in light of a study by the AA that found driving too close to the vehicle in front was considered the most annoying and dangerous habit on the road.

According to the group, individuals should not try and deter tailgaters by braking sharply.

It stated motorists should instead attempt to get themselves out of the situation.

A spokesperson for the organisation advised: "Find the earliest opportunity to change lanes in safety and allow the tailgater to get past you and become somebody else’s problem."

Meanwhile, safety-conscious drivers may find there are a range of cheap car spares available online that can help them ensure their autos are in peak condition.
