Young people should benefit from cheaper car insurance if they take advanced motoring courses, it has been suggested.

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) welcomed calls for novices to benefit financially if they demonstrate a commitment to improving their skills behind the wheel.

In addition to this, the group claimed there should be other rewards available.

ABD founding member Hugh Bladon stated: "If the government were sensible, they would give people plus points instead of minus if they’ve passed some sort of accredited improvement course."

He claimed extra training is useful because young drivers are often over confident after passing their test and do not appreciate the potential consequences of making a mistake on the road.

Mr Bladon added it is important for inexperienced motorists to realise that they really start learning after losing their L-plates.

Youngsters who are keen to see their insurance premiums fall as quickly as possible may find replacing worn car parts can help to ensure their auto is running as smoothly as possible, thereby reducing their chances of being involved in an accident.
