Italian manufacturer Lancia was established in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia - a former Fiat engineer and racer. Although the company’s factory burned down early in its first year, 1908 saw the introduction of its first model in the shape of the Alpha. This began Lancia’s habit of naming vehicles after letters of the Greek alphabet.
The Alpha was surprisingly successful and exportation to Great Britain and even to America began almost immediately. Vincenzo Lancia himself raced the car in competition before developing several other popular models including the Aprilia, which was introduced shortly before his death in 1937.
Lancia has made an important contribution to the manufacturing world - pioneering the ‘V’ engine design with the introduction of the V4 during the 1920s and the V6 in 1950. The 1914 Theta is credited as being the first European car to be equipped with electric lighting and starter as standard.
In 1969 the company was purchased by Fiat and it remains under its fellow Italian firm’s control today. By 1986 Fiat had also acquired Alfa Romeo and merged the two to form Alfa Lancia Spa. Under Fiat the successful Delta was produced - winning Lancia the European Car of the Year award in 1980.
By 1994, however, Lancia had withdrawn from all right hand drive markets - thanks in part to a poor reputation which developed over rust problems in the 1980s. Despite commercial problems the company has emulated its founder’s passion for racing to become the World Rally Championship’s most successful brand - with six consecutive manufacturer’s titles between 1987 and 1992 cementing Lancia’s legacy.
