The Chrysler Motors Corporation was established in America in 1925 and by 1928 its founder, Walter Chrysler, had set up several different brands under the name. Among these brands was Dodge Brothers, as Chrysler attempted to create a company in a similar vein to General Motors. Soon the company was regarded as one of the ‘Big Three’ of American cars, along with General Motors and Ford.
As a major manufacturer Chrysler led the industry by being the first to use a wind tunnel in development. In 1934 the Airflow model was released – the first to use the principles of streamlining in design to reduce air resistance. This pioneering tradition continued in 1960 as Chrysler became the first manufacturer to replace generators with alternators.
An attempt to break into the European market in 1966 proved difficult as industrial problems, particularly in Britain, prevented Chrysler from establishing itself. The company withdrew from Europe in 1968 though it would return in 1990.
In 1979 financial difficulties left Chrysler requiring loan guarantees from the US Government in order to survive, but survive it did and in 1987 acquired American Motors Corporation – mainly for the Jeep brand.
In 1998 Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz to form DaimlerChrysler, though since then it has been alleged that this was in fact a takeover by the German manufacturer. The merger has been mostly successful for Chrysler, as despite early economic problems the company has recovered, with the 300, 300M and PT Cruiser all being named North American Car of the Year since.
EuroNCAP Safety Ratings for Chrysler cars
The European New Car Assessment Programme produces reports on the safety of vehicles based on the results of several crash tests. As well as measuring how the car will hold up in a crash the risk to a pedestrian struck by the car is assessed. The star ratings (maximum 5) of key Chrysler models are shown below.
