Porsche is regarded by many to be the world’s most prestigious brand and its sports cars are among the most luxurious on the market. Established in Germany in 1931, the company’s first car was made in 1938 but was not released to the public. The Second World War prevented production during much of the 1940s but in 1948 the 356 (which is commonly believed to be Porsche’s first model) was introduced.
The 356 proved successful, as did its successor the 550 Spyder, but it was the 911 which would become Porsche’s defining model. Created in 1964 and still in production today - the 911 accounts for over a third of the company’s sales. Over the years several variations have accommodated for the differing needs of customers and ensured the model’s continuing success.
From the outset Porsche cars have been successful in motor racing, which has allowed the company to refine its sports car designs as well as benefit form the publicity and attention that comes with racing victory. Porsche is the most successful manufacturer ever to compete in the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans - with 16 overall wins. The brand has also participated in Formula One but not with any great success and it has not been involved since 1991.
Today Porsche is involved with design and engineering for other brands, (including Harley Davidson) while since 1990 Toyota has been assisting Porsche in developing a hybrid SUV. Volkswagen have also played a significant role in the brand’s history - providing many parts for the early models. This relationship continues today as Porsche owns a 25.1% in the Volkswagen Company and as such retains the right to veto.
