Isuzu 4x4 - Suv Parts Although Isuzu Motors probably sees itself principally as a truck producer it is also known throughout the world for its car and engine manufacturing. Established in Japan in 1916, the company adopted the Isuzu name in 1949. A truck produced in 1934 originally bore it, named after Japan’s Isuzu River.

Early in its existence Isuzu relied on partnerships with more established companies to develop expertise. Technical cooperation was established with British brand Wolseley (in 1918) and Rootes (in 1953). A capital agreement was made with General Motors in 1971, which led to the release of the Gemini model three years later.

A joint venture with Subaru saw the creation of Subaru Isuzu Automotive in 1987, a plant which produced several models including the Vauxhall Frontera. Financial difficulties forced Isuzu to pull out in 2003, with Subaru buying its shares for just one dollar and renaming the plant Subaru of Indiana Automotive.

Throughout this time General Motors continued to play an important role, owning a 49% stake in Isuzu in 1999 but reducing this to 12% by 2002. In 1998 the two brands had formed DMAX – a diesel engine manufacturing plant – but General Motors took full control in 2002 and sold its remaining Isuzu shares in 2006.

Isuzu continues to be known for its engine manufacturing, producing tens of millions each year. The brand exports commercial vehicles around the world, though dwindling sales in recent years have threatened to force withdrawals from some markets. However the company’s bus and truck business continues to thrive, as one of the biggest in the world.
