Bentley Motors was founded in 1919 and soon committed to motor sports, winning four consecutive 24 hours of Le Mans trophies from 1927 to 1930. Bentley struggled to establish itself commercially though, as economic problems meant few could afford its expensive models.
Rolls Royce (one of Bentley's main competitors of the time) bought the company in 1931 and merged much of the range into its own. Production began in Crewe, Cheshire in 1946 and during this time the Bentley Continental range was introduced.
By the 1980s Bentley began to experience a revival as it was able to separate itself from the parent company, with many models proving more successful than Rolls Royce’s. In 1998 the Volkswagen Group took control – the same year in which the Arnage model was released. Volkswagen allowed the Rolls Royce brand to pass to BMW.
In 2002 Bentley created a one-off "State Limousine" - a car similar to the Arnage but larger and with significant modifications, including security features such as bazooka-proof glass. The car was presented to Queen Elizabeth II to mark her Golden Jubilee.
Bentley has been known for producing expensive, luxurious models throughout its history and consequently most of its cars can only be produced in relatively small numbers. Growing demand in recent years has meant that waiting lists of over a year have developed, as the Crewe plant’s production has been unable to match this demand.
